assateague island

we left at 5am to outsmart the memorial day traffic. we watched the sun come up as bobby drove us into the horizon. passing farms on the one lane highway, i kicked myself that it was too early to stop and pick up fruit. we stopped at an ole timers diner interrupting the gentlemen's coffe and chats to sit down for some pancakes. i announced that we were almost there maybe a half an hour away. a missed turn and 2 hours later we ended up on the virginia side of assateague! we checked out the cute vintage tourist town of chinca-something found out they don't allow dogs at their nature preserve and that our car was completely out of oil and pulled into the maryland side of assateague close to noon. but--we had no traffic!

the beach was windy & gorgeous as ever! we had a picnic lunch of tuna and pb&j sandwiches, chips, grapes, apples, oreo's, and juice. i fell asleep in the sun, bobby studied, ryan and serena played around, hero dug in the sand, we all went running with hero, and splashed in the water (i went all the way under for swimming--it felt sooo good!!). it was a perfect day-a bit cold with the wind when the sun went under a cloud-but fantastic otherwise. i wish everyday was a beach day!
