summer came on like a sticky sweat
we could feel it coming
and there was nothing we could do to stop it
the excitement
and activity
it sweltered around us
leaving us hot and full with its taste
the sun burning our bodies
the heat turning us inside out
we lingered in it
wanting to be there
our breathing heavy
like a kettle in full boil
we were ready
and uncomfortable
bubbles bursting into air
we clung to any form of shade
an illusion
only to remind us
that the rays gleaming through
that power
was pulling us too
when the voices stopped
the birds sang louder
the trees talked
the deer stared
the turtles walked
flowers parted
like a smile emerging
on a twelve year olds face
a book read outloud
so we all knew the same story
restlessly waiting for the pause
of words exiting the mouth
like summer exhaling
its hot breath on our feet
