the arrival

today grandma and mom arrived in D.C. to share an early thanksgiving with us for a week in the compound house. we started off the normal greetings, mom anxiously digging through her suitcase to pull out all her goodies and treats for us jacked up on nerves and caffeine. grandma chilling taking in the chaos. jeff excited to talk to everyone. we spent the afternoon hanging out in the kitchen talking and snacking until the girls awoke and momma held savannah and we all played with hailey.

we had a big dinner a classic "roast." followed by jeff and becca putting the girls to bed while i tried to clean up asking grandma to sit down and rest while she stubbornly took over much of the work, listening to mom talk to herself as she hustled along putting things away and cleaning. i recounted grandma's old saying, "if you don't clean up the counters you aren't finished with the dishes." proof that i always listen to her lectures and bits of advice, despite what she thinks.

my favorite moments were watching mom coo savannah to sleep on her chest in the rocking chair both looking so comfy and content nuzzled together, a perfect nana. watching grandma's eyes well up as we speak knowing her sensitive heart is giving her away despite her gruff overlay. hearing stories of her teaching feeling so inspired by her and uplifted in the way she believes i could somehow do what she did for so many years. hanging out together in the "deluxe" basement as grandma called it talking late into the night as i rubbed mom and grandmas feet with oil. watching my grandma complain she doesn't need a bath because she took on yesterday while mom gets clean and puts on a silk nightie and robe and grandma walks around in grandpa's old long johns with a tee shirt so worn you can see through it. going to sleep feeling so blessed to be among my wonderful family.

thank you lord for them. for all the quirks, the cuteness, the rough edges, the smiles, the love, the encouragement, the tangles and snarls we pass through year by year to still get together and call ourselves family and truly enjoy the fellowship of being together.

oh we are both so blessed to have such wonderful and closeknit families! it's such a rare thing, but the most beautiful. isn't it great to be part of 4 generations under one roof? incredible....
