something my mom and i have always done together is making cookies. when i was little, she brought out her giant hefty kitchen aid mixer and let me help measure all the ingredients to add into our chocolate chip wonders. we would break apart pecans into tiny pieces which probably didn't take long, but with all my concentrated child energy it felt like forever until we finally had measuring cups brimming with nuts. she taught me how to level the dry ingredients and how to pack brown sugar nice and tight. she taught me to use less salt or none at all and not to measure vanilla precisely but rather spill a little extra because it tastes so delicious. i can't make cookies without thinking about her. she does them so well and so quickly. what is it about certain pastimes that feel so nostalgic when you do them in the present?
this week on my mother's last day of vacation at our house, we got to make cookies together. we made fall sugar cookies in hailey's favorite shapes, leaves, nuts, acorns, pumpkins, and cats.
i don't know how my mom cuts the dough so well. i always mess my shapes up and you can't even tell what it is by the time i get it onto the pan! not my mama. she goes so quick and scoops em up and dabs em on the pan like it ain't no thing. i wish i had this talent packed away in my dna somewhere.
hailey actually started shaking in excitement when she took her first bite! deliciousness! thanks mama, wish you were always here to play fall with.
